Son Doong, the world’s largest cave, is a bucket list opportunity to explore one of Vietnam’s spectacular natural underground phenomena.
Son Doong was first discovered by a man in 1990. Ho Khanh, a local logger, who was searching for food and timber to earn a living, encountered an opening in the cliff. Nineteen years later he finally led cave professionals to rediscover it and, after a survey, it was declared the largest cave by cross-section on the planet.
In 2013 Son Doong was open to the public and is now explorable only on a 4-day, 3-night expedition with Oxalis Adventure Tours. On this amazing tour, you will explore rainforests, cross rivers, climb the Great Wall of Vietnam and sleep in some of the most exceptional campsites you’ve ever seen.
Being only around 3 million years old, Son Doong had two massive ceiling collapses which occurred around 500,000 years ago, which will be explored during your expedition. The cave is 5km long, up to 200m high and 150m wide also holds amazing and gigantic stalagmites and stalactites.
Your tour will have no more than 10 people with a restricted age limit of 18 years and above. The tour is only available from January to August due to flooding on the other months and you must be exceptionally fit as this isn’t for the faint-hearted. Only 1000 tourists are permitted to explore the caves each year, so be sure to book early.
The 4 days are all-inclusive of meals, all camping & safety gear, accommodation the night before and after the tour, first aid and rescue equipment and, of course, your guide. There is a list of what is included, what you must bring and things that are nice to have with you should you want to.
So, if you are ready for some rocky climbs, long treks through the jungle, an epic challenge and spectacular photoshoots then don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime experience.
